Day XI.II: Magical deeds are afoot, dear reader. Magical darkness…

Now that it’s nighttime, I’ll update on some other Rothenburg o. d. T. happenings:

The city’s signature pastry is a big lump of fried shortbread dough called a Schneeball. It’s definitely a medieval creation. I knew I wouldn’t like it, so I passed on this one.

I’ve got a need for Schneed… NOT! I imagine someone could break a tooth on one of these. They keep for 8 weeks on the shelf.

There are also some stores that capitalize on the medieval theme.

Various types of alcohol at the medieval store. I found it funny because they look exactly like the beauty potion Shrek steals from a potion factory in Shrek 2.

At dusk tonight, I went on a tour led by a historical actor who’s been doing the job for decades. He walked through the streets with dignity, despite his audience, and attire. Clad in the manner of a darkly cloaked “night watchman,” he led a massive group of tourists through the town and gave some history that seemed possibly apocryphal but I’m too lazy to look up. Something about his mild-mannered demeanor and German accent made for some funny line deliveries about how nasty it was to live in medieval times.

On patrol.
Telling us about the plague.

Now I’d like to do a throwback to my mom’s scrapbook of her own trip to Germany decades ago. The town has six towers, and I was bedeviled by trying to find where she took this photo. So I it’s not the same tower, but I do think this is still meaningful.

Off to Munich tomorrow!

Light from sunset hitting the town.
